Fallawing his trip tö Damascus, Refik Efendi first started working at the the Directorate of Foundations (Evkaf) and then moved to the Directorate of Religious Affairs (ME!şihat) where he served at various positions until 1868. Refik Efendi was the Chief Religious Officer (Şeyhülislam) from August 9,.1866 to April 30, 1868 and after that he served asa member of the Assembly of Ministers (Meclis-i Mahsus-ı Vukela) until his death on April 20, 1871. He is.buried .at the cemetery of the Fatih Mosque. Refik Efendi, a harpworking and a very successful civil servant of his times, was also a master of Islamic jurisprudence (Fıkıh).
