N2  - This study discusses children’s comprehension competence of thereferents in the utterances in Turkish literary texts. Therefore, 52 eightgraders from middle classes have been given two stories from where225 referents have been taken from the dialogues in order to test thechildren’s comprehension competence of the referents and the data havebeen analyzed by t-tests and ratio tests. The fi ndings indicate that thechildren cannot be said to have comprehended the referents well. Interms of the types of the referents, the children seem to have understoodanaphoric and cataphoric referents better than exophoric referents Thefi ndings also show that the female children have understood functionalreferents better than the male children. Therefore, authors who write forchildren should give importance to the use of referents so as to help thecomprehension competence of children.Key words: reference, types of referents, text linguistics, semiotics,literature for children, language acquisition, comprehension competenceBu çalışma, çocukların Türkçe yazınsal metinlerde kullanılansözcelerdeki göndergeleri kavrama edincini tartışmaktadır. Bu nedenle,52 tane orta katmandan gelen ilköğretim sekizinci sınıfta okuyan çocuğa,kavrama edinçlerini sınamak amacıyla konuşma metinlerinde geçen225 göndergenin yoklandığı iki tane öykü verilmiş ve veriler t-testi veoran testi ile çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular, çocukların göndergeleri tamolarak anlayamadıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Gönderge türlerine göreçocukların kavrama edinçlerine bakıldığında ise çocuklar, artgöndergeve öngöndergeleri metindışı göndergelerden daha iyi anlamışlardır.Bulgular, ayrıca kızların erkeklere oranla işlevsel göndergeleri daha iyianladıklarını ortaya koymuştur. Bu nedenle, çocuklara yönelik yazınsaltürde metin yazanların, çocukların dil edinimine yardımcı olabilecekdüzeyde göndergeleri kullanmaları çocuk okurların yararına olacaktır.Anahtar sözcükler: gönderim, gönderge türleri, metindilbilim,göstergebilim, çocuk yazını, dil edinimi, kavrama edinci
