Heaviness, which humanbeing experiences as an existence problem against life, is an expression of the reality that is applied to language. Despite this reality, there is a tendency in humanbeing to lightness and get light. Literature provides an opportunity to make this desire possible. In other words, it is possible to make light the heaviness, which is created by the reality applied to the language, with the interference of literature to language. In literary texts in which feeling of heaviness and lightness show themselves in shape of linguistic images, it is possible to see how the artist perceive the world through these images and the dimensions of the relationship in this perception that humanbeing makes with self and with the world. It can be seen in Tevfik Fikret’s poems that the spiritual meanings of both values arestated through various images. The desire to lighten the real world and his body, which condemn his self to this heaviness against the reality of life, appears as an important psychological indicator in Tevfik Fikret’s poems. This article will handle the meanings of lightness and heaviness images in his poems and analyse how the psychological state of the poet reflects based on the meanings attributed to these images.
