However weed control is an important issue, which cause to increase the cost of cotton production. In general weeds are hoed by hand and tractor 2-3 times per growing season to avoid the yield losses due to weed competition, and chemical control are also applied with this aim. Weed competition starts at early growth stages of cotton and cause considerable yield losses in the case of non-control. Previous studies showed that the critical period for weed control in cotton is the period between 1-3 and 8-9 weeks after crop emergence. However, late emerged weeds affect the quality of cotton during harvest. Therefore weed control in cotton should be carried out to obtain high yield and quality. To achieve a successful weed control in cotton, weed species occurring in a region, even in a partciular field, should be determined, and their biological and morphological properties, as well as reproduction habits should be considered. With this purpose, weed species occurring in cotton growing areas of Aydin province-Turkey, and their control methods are summarised in this review.
