Materials and Methods: The study included 202 nursing highs school students of grades 2, 3, and 4. Data were collected using a 17-item questionnaire that inquired demographic characteristics of the nurs- ing students, their status of receiving intensive care nursing lessons, their opinions on critical care nursing internship and on intensive care nursing, tendency for a career in intensive care nursing after graduation, and the reasons for their choices. Results: Although the nursing curriculum did not include an intensive care nursing lesson, 76.7% and 92.6% of the students took theoretical and practical courses, respec- tively, as part of their nursing subjects. The great majority of the students (n=187, 92.6%) stated that the absence of intensive care nursing lesson in the curriculum was a flaw. Of the study group, 44.1% (n=89) preferred a postgraduate career in intensive care nursing, while 55.9% (n=113) declared their unwillingness. Adverse interactions experienced by the students during practi- cal internship in intensive care units accounted primarily for nurses (40.4%), followed by physicians (34.9%) and patients (20.5%). Willingness to a future career in inten- sive care unit was more prevalent among grade 4 stu- dents (46.2%). The leading reasons in favor of intensive care nursing were the chance for increased experience (30.3%) and satisfaction with caring critically ill patients (28.1%). The leading reasons for unwillingness, on the other hand, were tiring nature of the job (39.8%) and unpleasantness of the environment (26.5%). Conclusion: Although there was considerable interest in intensive care nursing, about 60% of nursing stu- dents did not consider a career in intensive care nurs- ing following graduation due to inherent characteristics of working environment CR - Kaya H.
