Resistance is especially encountered in restricted and closed groups where the volunteering principle is ignored. In order for group counseling to be effective, the group leader may have to use exercises for coping with resistance. The present study has emerged on the basis of this need and introduces a new exercise used in the group process and its effects. The outcomes of this exercise which is practiced in two groups simultaneously by two group leaders are discussed from the perspective of the members. The members’ opinions in the reports recorded at the end of the group sessions comprise the data of the present research. As a result of the content analysis, the effectiveness of the "wailing wall" exercise developed for coping with resistance has been classified into 5 categories: (1) motivating effect, (2) belongingness and the feeling of us, (3) modelling effect, (4) transition to activity stage and (5) the exercise’s idiosyncratic therapeutic effect. The "wailing wall" exercise, which are presented, is recommended for experts working in counseling groups.
}, number={3}
