Qualitative phenomenological research design was used in this study. The participants were selected from 9 high schools located in Ankara city center whose academic achievement levels are low via deviant case sampling which is one of the purposive sampling methods. Descriptive analysis and content analysis were used in the analysis of data. It was found that while school principals see success in both national and international exams as a criteria for student achievement, teachers do not. The findings indicated that the reasons of academic failure were mostly rooted from the individual him/herself, family, school or education system. Although different descriptions by the participants are made among the problems that students with low academic success face, it is emphasized that some troublesome situations can be emerged out like absenteeism, not attending to education and leaving school.
