Mixtures were prepared with ground diatomite, cartonpierrestucco at ratios of 15, 25 and 35% in weight with respect to diatomite, and water. The mixtures werekneaded to plastic consistency, placed into pre-lubricated moulds of 40x40x160 mm in size. Cast samples werekept in moulds for 24 hours, then removed and then were taken into drying-oven. Three samples were producedfrom each mixture. The samples were dried in the oven at 100±2°C for 24 hours and fired for 24 hours at atemperature gradually raised to 1100°C. The fired products were progressively cooled down to room temperatureand unit weight, compressive strength, bending strength and water absorption (by weight) tests were performed.Values of unit weight, compressive strength and bending strength were increased as the quantity of stuccoincreased while water absorption values were decreased. Experiments showed that the mixture of diatomite andstucco has the potential to be used in the production of lightweight constructional components.
