N2  - During the 19th century excavations at the Augustus Temple in Ankara,a headless seated Roman statue was found, photographed by a Russianphotographer and later published in France. The very same statue appearsin various pictures and sketches during the 19th and 20th centuries, includingthe ones by the Italian architect Giulio Mongeri who later contributedto the city with several important edifices. Although the statue was mentionedby several scholars it was never thoroughly studied. The artwork,which after its discovery at the Temple of Augustus showed up in severaldifferent places never returned to the temple but it has always remainedon display and it has been appreciated both during the Ottoman and theRepublican period Ankara. The statue has been in the permanent open airexhibit at the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in Ankara where it iswaiting for proper stylistic and archival research.
