Invasive medical procedures such as mechanical ventilation, catheterization and use of broad spectrum antibiotics are the most important causes for emerge of resistant pathogens in the ICU. In this study, we examined the endotracheal aspirate samples of the patients followed under mechanical ventilation and we aimed to evaluate the causative pathogens for the lower respiratory tract infections. The endotracheal aspirate samples (EAS) of the ICU patients were retrospectively evaluated during the one-year period between March 2015-2016. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing results were interpreted according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute criteria. Total number of 350 EAS was examined and 130 of them yielded 141 pathogens. A. baumannii was the most common pathogen isolated from EAS followed by P. aeruginosa and others. Carbapenem resistance was detected in 6 K. pneumoniae isolates. Colistin and tigesiklin were the susceptible drugs for all A. baumannii isolates and colistin for the all P.aeruginosa isolates. A total of 20 strains of S. aureus were determined in this study and all of which were susceptible to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid. Six of the S. aureus isolates were resistant to methicillin. Necessary preventive measures should be implanted due to the fact that high resistance rates among A. baumannii isolates together with carbapenem resistance among K. pneumoniae isolates will cause serious problems especially for the ICU patients in the future.

}, number={4}, publisher={Oğuz KARABAY}
