Invasive medical procedures such as mechanicalventilation, catheterization and use of broad spectrum antibiotics are the most importantcauses for emerge of resistant pathogens in the ICU. In this study, we examined theendotracheal aspirate samples of the patients followed under mechanical ventilation and weaimed to evaluate the causative pathogens for the lower respiratory tract infections. Theendotracheal aspirate samples (EAS) of the ICU patients were retrospectively evaluatedduring the one-year period between March 2015-2016. Antimicrobial susceptibility testingresults were interpreted according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute criteria.Total number of 350 EAS was examined and 130 of them yielded 141 pathogens. A.baumannii was the most common pathogen isolated from EAS followed by P. aeruginosaand others. Carbapenem resistance was detected in 6 K. pneumoniae isolates. Colistin andtigesiklin were the susceptible drugs for all A. baumannii isolates and colistin for the allP.aeruginosa isolates. A total of 20 strains of S. aureus were determined in this study and allof which were susceptible to vancomycin, teicoplanin and linezolid. Six of the S. aureusisolates were resistant to methicillin. Necessary preventive measures should be implanteddue to the fact that high resistance rates among A. baumannii isolates together withcarbapenem resistance among K. pneumoniae isolates will cause serious problems especiallyfor the ICU patients in the future.
