To compare the capital adequacy of Turkish Banking system with the international regulations, it is analyzed that the standards of Basel committee known as an international authority in this field, and The Turkish Banking Law and the reports and publications of the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency of Turkey. According to legal reports and publications of the Turkish Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, as of April 2011, capital adequacy ratio of Turkish Banking sector is 17,9%, and this percentage is above and beyond of 8% which is suggested by international authorities and accepted as in Turkish Banking Law. Though the capital adequacy ratio of Turkish banking system higher than the targets suggested by national and international authorities, and this is a sign of the strength of the sector, this may have negative impact on the banks‟ efficient functioning of the credit system and so the mediation function of savings to investments. As a result, parallel to enhancing the „market discipline‟ and „efficiency of supervision systems‟ in the banking sector, at the future, decreasing the existing capital adequacy ratio of the banking sector as suggested by the international authorities and legally accepted level will contribute to social welfare via transferring the savings to the investments.
