TY - JOUR TT - THE CONCEPT OF MODERNIZATION AND COMPARISION OF THE WEST AND JAPAN IN NATSUME SŌSEKI’S WORKS AU - Salğar, Habibe PY - 2017 DA - June DO - 10.21497/sefad.328403 JF - Selçuk Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Dergisi JO - SEFAD PB - Selçuk Üniversitesi WT - DergiPark SN - 2458-908X SP - 165 EP - 178 IS - 37 KW - Natsume Sōseki KW - Meiji Dönemi KW - modernleşme KW - Japon toplumu N2 - In this study, Natsume Sōseki’s (1867-1916) approachregarding the changes in the socio-cultural area of Japan in Meiji Period(1868-1912) and the perception of Western culture in his works have beenexamined. In the period when Japan experienced important and sharp changes inaccordance with the model of the West, Sōseki with an intellectual personality, made an analogy with the troubles which he has facedin his inner world and theprotagonists in his works. The education he had received in England wasdecisive in his evaluation of the relationship between the Western world andJapan. While Japan took many concrete steps in social life thanks tomodernization, the psychological effects ofit upon individuals were thesubjects that the author dealt with the most. As a result, it has appeared thatNatsume Sōseki had a critical approach to the Japanese society in terms of somechanges that occur in the Meiji period. One of the strong criticisms made by Sōsekiisthat while modernization took spontaneous and progressive advancement in theWest, Japan experienced a rapid change in its culture and ordinary life.
