TY - JOUR TT - AN OBSERVATION ON INTRACAPSULAR AND POST-EMBRYONIC PHASES OF RIVER NERITE (Theodoxus fluviatilis) AU - Güler, Mehmet AU - Çoban, Deniz AU - Kırım, Birsen PY - 2018 DA - January JF - Journal of Aquaculture Engineering and Fisheries Research JO - J Aquacult Eng Fish Res PB - Özkan ÖZDEN WT - DergiPark SN - 2149-0236 SP - 46 EP - 54 VL - 4 IS - 1 KW - Gastropod KW - Neritidae KW - Egg capsule KW - Embryonic development N2 - The river nerite (Theodoxus fluviatilis, Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the most common gastropod grazer species inEurope inland and brackish waters. Its feeding activity significantly impactson periphyton which has a decisive role on the water parameters and thepopulation dynamics. In the present study, reproductive outputs and larvalphases of the river nerites were examined via fieldcollected and laboratory cultivated samplings. The length of capsules laidby adults was between 0.7 and 1.1 mm. Viable embryos were detected first on the33rd day post-spawning. After few development phases embryo reacheda ready-to-hatch phase with completely developed foot and pigmented protoconchbefore hatching. There was never more than one embryo per capsule. The earliesthatching was observed on the 53rd day of spawning. But most of theembryos did not hatch even they were fully developed. The shell length of thehatchlings was about 0.8 and the width was 0.6 mm. It was estimated that thelength of a newly hatched crawling juvenile can be about 1/7 of the length ofan adult.
