TY - JOUR TT - Looking at Sectarian Conflict through An Ethnic Group and A Local Context :The Case of Iraqi Turkmens and Tal Afar AU - Yıldız, Tunahan PY - 2017 DA - December Y2 - 2017 DO - 10.26513/tocd.334901 JF - Türkiye Ortadoğu Çalışmaları Dergisi JO - TJMES PB - Sakarya Üniversitesi WT - DergiPark SN - 2147-7523 SP - 41 EP - 74 VL - 4 IS - 2 KW - Irak KW - Mezhepçilik KW - Telafer KW - Türkmenler KW - Araçsalcılık N2 - This study relies on the latent core of the IraqiTurkmens regarding sectarian conflicts and groups that have been major topicsand classifications of Iraq especially since 2003. In search of parameters andimpacts of post-2003 sectarian conflict, this study examines the case of TalAfar, a town of mass strifes of Iraqi Turkmens. In the first instance, how toapproach theoretically to sectarianism will be investigated in the light of primordialism, instrumentalism and constructivism. Accordingly, the present approaches havebeen underdeveloped in the analysis of sectarianism but a modifiedinstrumentalism can be recruited especially to understand Tal Afar. In thesecond instance, why and how the conflict occurred in Tal Afar will bediscussed. It will be argued that security forces, insurgent groups and tribes emergedas main drivers of sectarianism, American practices catalyzed their activities, and sectarian images, insecurity environment and tribal order renderedsectarianism sustainable. In the third instance, the results of the survey thatwas conducted among DAESH-victim Iraqi Turkmen refugees in Ankara to measurethe magnitude of sectarianism will be presented. Findings will indicate thatsectarianism lacks large social base but has significant constructive power andcoercivity. CR - Kitap, Makale ve Mülakatlar CR - Abbas Aziz ile mülakat, Şubat 2016, Ankara.
