N2  - In this study, the structures involvingnegative utterances in Baudelaire’s poem Cravingfor Oblivion and the functions of the oblivion in the discourse wasexamined. In this poem, an understanding of negation at the word level is atthe forefront. The negation discussed by the poet is evaluated through thecontextual clues conveying pastness. In this context, it is thought that thereis pleasure in oblivion and there is an effort to prove it. In the poem, it canbe seen that a new space-time as a process is constructed and negativity atword level is suggested. By expressing his own desires basing on relevancetheory, subject of the poem activates the relations between subject/receiverwith the addressing function at a different position. A negation language isconstructed by applying sign theory to subject pragmatics in the context of ahorse discourse. This special usage is consciously constructed by the poet andit is the poetic equivalent of a negative vocabulary. The poet constructs somepropositions by using the no longer/not discourse. Therefore, it is thoughtthat how a context which defines subjects through acts is activated can bedetermined through syntax-based approaches. Moreover the poet can constructthis relevance by negative word usage in the metalanguage which activates thepragmatic part of the discourse. Poet, who designs life as Le Gout du Nèant (Craving for Oblivion) in the poem, empowers lifewith the pleasure of negativity. This negativity is maintained in the horseexample. The poet violates the rules which determine sign, sender and thecontext, makes changes in the syntax, implicates the past structure and bydoing this he brings the past closer to the present.
