TY - JOUR TT - THE IMPORTANCE OF RUSSIAN MILITARY PRESENCE IN CENTRAL ASIA FOR RUSSIA'S REGIONAL SECURITY AU - Sucu, Ali Emre PY - 2017 DA - December JF - Akademik Hassasiyetler PB - Hüzeyfe Süleyman ARSLAN WT - DergiPark SN - 2148-5933 SP - 125 EP - 138 VL - 4 IS - 8 KW - Bölgesel Güvenlik KW - Askeri Üsler KW - Orta Asya KW - Rus Dış Politikası KW - Sınır Bütünlüğü N2 - This article aims to evaluate the Russian militarypresence for Russia's regional security in Central Asia. In order to achievethis, the importance of Central Asia will be contextualized with major regionalproblems that determine the Russian security policy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian policy towards Central Asiahas been mainly shaped by security issues, especially after militaryintervention of the United States in Afghanistan in 2011. The multilateralmilitary-security relations between Russia and the five regional states shouldbe understood by dividing two aspects. They are the military bases of Russia inCentral Asia and the multilateral cooperation tools which are led by Russia:The Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) and its military alliance theCollective Security and Treaty Organization (CSTO). The cooperation mechanismsof those organizations will be underlined in the study. In order to understand the Russian security perception in CentralAsia, the recently approved versions of the foreign policy concept, themilitary doctrine, and the national security strategy of the Russian Federationas official discourse will also be evaluated to demonstrate military securitypriorities of the Russian Federation.
