N2  - Space in literature, together with time and other elements of narrative, plays an essential role in plot construction. Space in a literary work has diverse functions and takes on different meanings beyond simply designating the setting of action. In addition, space assumes further significance in a given work, with its social, cultural and economic dimensions. Therefore, meanings attributed to space in social life, besides the imperatives and possibilities brought into textual analysis by literary theory and tradition, are influential in the choice and expression of space. Tanzimat (Reformation) period holds an important place in the history of Turkish history and literature, as it signifies an era marked by the onset of Westernization movement. This period reflects an acquaintance with a different perspective in terms of literary theory, as well as the emergence of a different social, political and cultural environment. Thus, the novel entitled İntibah (Rebirth), one of the first novels produced in this period, was chosen in this study, which aims to determine and analyze the use of space in the novel with emphasis on its attributions and functions
