Before the bowel preparation, we evaluated preoperative and postoperative levels of serum calcium in patients who performed radical cystectomy and transintestinal urinary diversion. 88 patients who underwent radical cystectomy and transintestinal urinary diversion between 1997-2002 in our institution were eveluated. There were 6 women and 82 men with a mean age of 61±2.1 years (range 43-74 years). All patients were given mechanical bowel preparation 3 days before the operation. Serum total calcium, ionized calcium, albumine and magnesium levels were measured in all patients 3 days before the operation and at the morning of operation. All parameters were checked on the postoperative 3th day. We observed that the postoperative calcium levels were significantly lower than those in properative period. Clinical symptoms due to hypocalcemia occurred in one patient. There was no significant effect of TPN and blood product transfussion on calcium balance. The calcium balance of the body is the dynamic event which is stabilized via a multifactorial mechanisms. Although the requirements for calori intake and electrolytes is met parenterally, the electrolyte balance for those stated above should particularly be supported postoperativly. Otherwise, the calcium whose levels are dynamically regulated in bady should closely be monitored and supported.}, number={3}, publisher={Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi}
