The lifetime of proteins changes from a few minutes to weeks or more. Several functions of the intracellular protein degradation mechanisms are as follows: 1) To degrade and regulate the activity of enzymes, which play roles in some critical metabolic control points in order for the cell to respond efficiently to environmental changes and metabolic requirements under normal conditions. 2) Under the conditions of nutritional deprivation, to utilize proteins as a source of energy or amino acids. 3) To remove abnormal and nonfunctional proteins that result from transcriptional and translational errors. In this review, we tried to present knowledge about the general properties, structures and functions of several important intracellular proteolytic mechanisms.}, number={2}, publisher={Bursa Uludağ Üniversitesi}
