N2  - In this research, a new m e t h o d for barbiturates was d e v e l o p e d w h i c h is a p p l i c a b l e to t o x i c o l o g i c a l analysis based on extractive alkylation a n d gas c h r o m a t o g r a p h y . T h e p e n t a f l u o r o b e n z y l derivatives of twelwe barbiturates were p r e p a r e d and their r e t e n t i o n indices wered e t e r m i n e d a n d c o m p a r e d w i t h these o f c o r r e s p o n d i n g barbiturates on different gas c h r o m a t o g r a p h i c stationary phases. Electron-capture d e t e c t o r is the most sensitive for the p e n t a f l u o r o b e n z i l derivatives a n d the gas-liquid c h r o m a t o g r a p h i c stationary phase S E - 3 0 g a v e the m o s t r a p i d results. T h e rate o f extractive alkylation o f barbiturates was studied with respect to the c o n c e n t r a t i o n of t e t r a b u t y l a m m o n i u m a n d p H . O p t i m a l p H for extractive alkylation o f barbiturates was f o u n d t o b e 9 . T h e r e a c t i o n was c o m p l e t e d r a p i d l y w h e n the t e t r a b u t y l a m m o n i u m c o n c e n t r a t i o n was 0 . 2 M . T h e m i n i m u m d e tectable quantity o f P F B derivatives o f barbiturates was f o u n d t o b e 1 p i c o g r a m / µ lusing E C D b y gas c h r o m a t o g r a p h y
