AB  - Written 1888 by Swedish playwright August Strindberg, Miss Julie is considered a naturalisticplay that deals with power struggles between the characters Jean and Julie interms of gender and class. As anover-reacher, Jean tries to empower Julie in order to upgrade his social position.Hairy Ape, on the other hand, is anexpressionistic play which was written by American playwright Eugene O’Neill in1922. The play tells the degradedposition of Yank who searches for his social place in the society. After beinglabeled as a “filthy beast” by the daughter of a steel company owner, Yankinternalizes his status as an ape like creature. Throughout the play heinvolves in a quest as he tries to belong to a social class. Although writtenin two different centuries reflecting different cultures and cultural problems,both plays employ male characters who struggle to improve their position withinthe hierarchal and material society in spite of the status quo they face.Consequently, this study aims to analyze MissJulie and Hairy Ape in order toillustrate class struggles of the male characters that transgress from centuryto century and from one culture to another preserving the core of the problemsof the class issue in the modern society.

N2  - 1888yılında İsveçli oyun yazarı August Strindberg tarafından yazılan Miss Julie, cinsiyet ve sınıf açısındanana karakterler olan Jean ve Julie arasındaki güç mücadelesini ele alannatüralist bir oyundur. Oyun, aşırı hırslı olan Jean’in kendi sosyal pozisyonunuyükseltmek adına üst sınıftan olan Julie’yi etkisi altına alma çabasınıanlatır. Diğer yandan 1922’de Amerikalı oyun yazarı Eugene O’Neill tarafındanyazılan Hairy Ape ekspresyonist biroyundur. Oyun toplumda ait olduğu yeri arayan Yank’in toplumda indirgenenpozisyonunu anlatır. Çalıştığı şirketinsahibinin kızı tarafından ‘iğrenç yaratık’ diye adlandırılan Yank bir süre sonrakendine atfedilen yaratık yakıştırmasını içselleştirir. Yank aslında oyunboyunca bir sosyal gruba ait olmanın arayışı içindedir. İki farklı yüzyıldayazılmalarına ve de iki farklı kültürü ve farklı sorunları yansıtmalarınarağmen her iki oyun da işçi sınıfına ait olan erkek karakterleri ele alır. Bubakımda farklı akımlara ait olan bu iki oyun ortak bir temada buluşurlar. Bulunduklarısosyal konum üzerine bilinçlenmelerinin ardından hem Jean hem de Yankkarşılaştıkları statükocu durumlara rağmen kendi konumlarını değiştirmek adınaçabalarlar. Bu bağlamda hiyerarşik ve maddiyatçı toplumda sosyal olarakyükselmenin yolunu ararlar. Sonuç olarak bu çalışma yüzyıldan yüzyıla ve de birkültürden diğer kültüre devam eden sınıf mücadelesini erkek karakterlerüzerinden Miss Julie ve Hairy Ape oyunları üzerinden incelemeyihedeflemektedir.
