TY - JOUR T1 - A Criticism Of Contemporary Mass Tourism By Historical Analogic Approach AU - Akbulut, Onur PY - 2018 DA - December DO - 10.30625/ijctr.470022 JF - Uluslararası Güncel Turizm Araştırmaları Dergisi JO - IJCTR PB - İzmir Katip Çelebi Üniversitesi WT - DergiPark SN - 2587-1528 SP - 52 EP - 59 VL - 2 IS - 2 LA - en AB - This articleunderlines two historical analogic approaches as a criticism of thecontemporary mass tourism. It is argued that western hegemony developedcountries may originate contemporary mass tourism. According to historian andclassicist Kagan (2007) two complementary main features of western civilizationare Hellenism and Christianity. This article takes these complementary featuresinto consideration with Leiper’s (1981) Tourism System’s two main componentsdemand and supply. These four concepts were discussed using historicalanalogies. Demand vs (versus) Christianity (heaven portrayal) were chosen asthe first analogy. Supply vs Hellenism (polis and subjects [helots] specific toSparta city state) was proposed as the second analogy. These two analogies mayhelp to gain a better understanding of mass tourism by means of a criticapproach with regard to its proposed historical roots.
