It is used bybees as a glue, general-purpose sealer, and draught extruder for beehives.Propolis contains a wide variability ofactive principles (flavonoids and phenolic acids). Variations in the chemicalcomposition of propolis are mainly assigned to the difference in the preferredregional plants visited by honeybees. Flavonoid and esters of phenolic acidsare generally regarded to be responsible for the antimicrobial activity ofpropolis. The aim of the present study was toinvestigate the antibacterial activity of propolis samples collected from 5counties in Transylvania (Romania) against different bacterial strains: threeGram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcusaureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes), twoGram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and, alsodifferent bacteria responsible for different bee diseases. The methodology usedfor the determination was agar diffusion technique. Enroxil was used aspositive control and alcohol as negative control.  The tested ethanolic propolis extracts are richsources of polyphenolic substances (high amounts of phenolic acids andflavonoids were quantified in the samples) and show a good antibacterialactivity against Gram-positive bacteria. As for the Gram-negative bacteria theresults obtained are very different. It can be concluded that a positivecorrelation exists between antibacterial activity and the content ofpolyphenols and, also between antibacterial activity of extracts and somespecific compounds from propolis.  KW - Chemical Composition KW - Antibacterial Activity KW - Propolis CR - .
