N2  - Intesive care units are the main source of the widespread infections due to resistant microorganisms. Therefore, financial expenses necessary for nosocomial infection control have been increasing day by day. In this study, antibiotic susceptibilities of gram negative bacteria isolated from the hospitalized patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) of our hospital between 1.1.2006 and 31.12.2006 were analyzed retrospectively. Most frequently isolated microorganisms causing infection were Acinetobacter baumanii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella spp. and Escherichia coli. It seemed that gram negative bacteria isolated from ICU were significantly resistant to all antibiotic groups. Carbepenem, netilmicin and cefaperazone-sulbactam resistance in Acineto-bacter baumanii isolates were 73.4%, 32.8% and 46%, respectively. The most effective antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains were carbapenems, piperacillin-tazobactam, cefaperazone-sulbactam and amikacin. High level of extended spectrum beta-lactamase production was found in gram negative enteric bacteria. Piperacillin-tazobactam, cefoxitin and amikacin were also found as significantly effective against this group of bacteria in addition to carbepenems and cefaperazone-sulbactam
