Twenty one, six month old male New Zealand rabbits, weighing on average 3.5±0.3 kg were used throughout this study. Rabbits were divided into three groups of 7 each. As normal drinking water was given to group I (control), 10 ppm and 40 ppm fluoride (as sodium fluorid) was given to group II and III by adding to drinking water for 70 days. In the blood samples obtained from rabbits on 0, 21 and 70 st days of the study, total leukocyte, erythrocyte and platelet counts, hemoglobin value, packed cell volume, and percentages of lymphocyte, monocyte and granulocyte were determined. The decrease in total erythrocyte counts, hemoglobin value and packed cell volume were significant in the treatment groups on 21 th day. It was observed that fluoride made a decrease in hemoglobin values, packed cell volume and total leukocyte counts in contrast to an increase in the percentage of lymphocyte and total leukocyte counts in group III on 70 th day. Our results showed that especially a decrease in erythrocyte count, hemoglobin value and packed cell volume may be associated with chronic fluorosis in rabbits.
