AB  - Does ethnomusicology have a role to play in the conversations swirlingaround the current environmental crisis? By virtue of our training andexperience as ethnomusicologists, do we have skills, knowledge, and expertisethat gives us credibility in the embattled public sphere? Do we havestanding, as ethnomusicologists, to contribute any wisdom to policy-makingabout the environment? Ethnomusicologists who have engaged withecomusicology do bring to these conversations an understanding of sound,music, nature, culture and the environment. Ecomusicology as a field coalescedabout ten years ago as the ecocritical study of music. Borrowingfrom literary ecocriticism, musicologists examined relationships amongcomposers, compositions, nature, and the cultural production of music.Directly after the publication of a manifesto in the Journal of the AmericanMusicological Society in 2011, ecomusicology attracted scholarsworldwide not only from musicology but also from ethnomusicology, organology,acoustics, anthropology, and ecological science. Ecomusicologyalso attracted composers, performers, journalists, and environmental activistswith interests in music. At the first ecomusicology conference, in2012, the wide variety of approaches to this new field were on display. Withina few years, the definition of ecomusicology had expanded to becomethe study of sound, music, culture, nature, and the environment in a timeof environmental crisis. More recently, ecomusicologists have begun toexplore the “eco-” prefix, not as ecocriticism but as ecology. Ever sinceWilliam K. Archer’s pioneering observations about music and ecology in1964, ethnomusicologists and musicologists have propsed an ecological ming of the cultural production of music, drawing on such fields as culturalecology, ecological psychology, and human ecology. This scholarship ispre-dates the field of ecomusicology. Ecomusicology, however, adds ecologicalscientists to the conversation about music and ecology, it emphasizesthe physical as well as the cultural environment, and it also brings a newsense of environmental crisis combining scholarship with activism. Acousticdimensions of the environment have thus far received little considerationin discussions of such issues as climate change, industrial pollution,environmental justice, and habitat loss. An ecomusicological approach tothe place of music and sound in the environment enables ethnomusicologiststo contribute their knowledge to these ongoing discussions, while italso grounds environmental activism in scholarship.

Ekoritizim terimini edebiyattanödünç alan müzikologlar besteciler, besteler, do􀃧a ve müzi􀃧in kültürel üretimiarasındaki ili􀄈kileri incelediler. Amerikan Müzikoloji Derne􀃧i Dergisi'nde2011 yılında bir bildirinin yayınlanmasından hemen sonra, ekomüzikolojidünya çapında sadece müzikolojiden de􀃧il, etnomüzikoloji, organoloji,akustik, antropoloji ve ekolojik bilim içindeki insanlarını cezbetti.Ekomuzikoloji ayrıca müzikle ilgilenen besteciler, sanatçılar, gazeteciler veçevre aktivistlerini de cezbetti. 􀃮lk olarak 2012 yılındaki ekomüzikolojikonferansında, bu yeni alana dair çok çe􀄈itli yakla􀄈ımlar sergilendi. Birkaçyıl içinde, ekomüzikolojinin tanımı, çevresel bir kriz döneminde ses, müzik,kültür, do􀃧a ve çevre çalı􀄈maları olarak geni􀄈letilmi􀄈ti. Daha yakın zamanda,ekomüzikologlar ekokritizm olarak de􀃧il ekoloji olarak “eko-”önekini ke􀄈fetmeye ba􀄈ladılar. William K. Archer'in 1964'te müzik ve ekolojihakkındaki öncü gözlemlerinden bu yana, etnomüzikologlar ve müzikologlar,kültürel ekoloji, ekolojik psikoloji ve insan ekolojisi gibi alanlaradayanarak müzi􀃧in kültürel üretiminin ekolojik bir çerçevesini ortaya koydular.Bu bilgi, ecomusicology alanından önce gelir. Ekomüzikoloji, müzikve ekoloji konusundaki sohbete ekolojik bilim insanlarını ekler, fiziksel vekültürel çevreyi vurgular ve aynı zamanda bursu aktivizm ile birle􀄈tirenyeni bir çevresel kriz hissi getirir. Ekomüzikoloji, müzik ve ekoloji konusundakisohbete ekolojik bilim adamları ekler, Kültürel çevreyi oldu􀃧u kadarfiziksel çevreyi de vurgular ve aynı zamanda bu bilimi aktivizm ile birle􀄈tiren yeni bir çevresel kriz duygusu getirir. 􀃮klim de􀃧i􀄈ikli􀃧i, endüstriyelkirlilik, çevre adaleti ve habitat kaybı gibi konuların tartı􀄈ılması içinde çevreninakustik boyutları çok az dikkate alınmı􀄈tır. Müzik ve sesin ortamdakiyerine dair ekomüzikolojik bir yakla􀄈ım, etnomüzikologların bu devameden tartı􀄈malara bilgileri ile katkıda bulunmalarını sa􀃧larken, aynı zamandabilimde çevresel aktivizmi de temel almaktadır.
