Alongside the struggle for material power, states strive to maintain or bring about a certain form of ideological structure which helps legitimize their domestic and foreign policies. The Middle Eastern international system has witnessed four waves of systemic conflict shaped around ideological matters and the last one is the so-called “Arab Spring.” The revisionist bloc has sought to alter the system’s ideological structure towards a popular democratic rule, while the status quo powers have struggled to maintain the existing ideological structure.
