Preserving Cultural Heritage and Shaping Sustainable Urban Futures: The Transformative Impact of Symbiotic Architecture On Historical Buildings

Abstract

Historical buildings are architectural structures reflecting the cultural, historical, and architectural characteristics specific to a certain society and period. Although these architectural structures were built to meet the needs of their era and society, they may face challenges in adapting to changing conditions, societal structures, and human needs over time. As a result of the industrial revolutions and the human, social, and technological changes of the 20th century, the revitalization of historical buildings according to contemporary needs has become a necessity (Kahya and Güler, 2019). The interplay between historic structures and modern architectural trends has long been a focal point within the realm of architectural discourse. Contemporary symbiotic additions establish a symbiotic relationship with historical structures, bringing forth a new approach to historical buildings, presenting different functional possibilities, and defining a new form of existence both structurally and experientially. In recent times, one particularly notable facet of this interplay is the integration of symbiotic enhancements into historical buildings, a practice aimed at seamlessly blending them with contemporary functionality and design principles. This article endeavors to delve into the transformative impact of contemporary symbiotic augmentations on historical buildings, examining the intricate interplay between architectural, urban, and historical dimensions. Through an exploration of various case studies, we aim to elucidate the potential and challenges inherent in this symbiotic relationship, ultimately shedding light on how the preservation of our architectural heritage can pave the way for a more vibrant future.
