This study investigates the first fixation duration, one of the eye movement parameters, of fourth grade students with high reading skills and low reading skills on words with high frequency and high dispersion values in narrative and expository text types for the first time in Turkish language. A total of 63 fourth grade students, 37 high-skilled and 26 low-skilled readers, were participated in the study. Narrative and expository texts were presented to the students through the eye tracking device and the first fixation duration data of the students were gathered during students’ reading. When the first fixation duration was examined for the words with high frequency and high dispersion values in both narrative and expository text types, findings showed that the first fixation duration of low-skilled readers was longer than the first fixation duration of the high-skilled readers. The findings obtained from the study were discussed within the framework of the relevant literature and recommendations were provided for future research.
</trans-abstract>
