Effect of Home Bleaching on the Color Differences of Polished and Glazed CAD-CAM Produced Monolithic Ceramics

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the color differences of mechanically polished and glazed CAD-CAM produced monolithic ceramics after home bleaching.
Materials and Method: In this study; three different CAD-CAM ceramics (lithium disilicate, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate, and monolithic zirconia) were prepared in 14x12x1 mm3 dimensions and divided into two subgroups as mechanical polishing and glazing (n=8). Afterwards, home bleaching agent containing 16% carbamide peroxide was applied to the specimen surfaces for 14 days (4 hours daily). The color parameters of the specimens were measured before and after the bleaching application and the values were recorded. The color difference values were calculated with two different formulas as ΔE00 and ΔEab. Results were statistically analyzed by using two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (P<0.05).
Results: According to the two-way ANOVA results, it was determined that material type and surface treatment factors were effective on the ΔE00 and ΔEab values and there was an interaction between the factors (P<0.05). The highest ΔE00 and ΔEab values were found in the monolithic zirconia group. ΔEab value was significantly lower in the glazed monolithic zirconia group than the mechanically polished monolithic zirconia group (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Ceramic type and surface finishing procedures affected the color difference values of lithium disilicate, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate, and monolithic zirconia ceramics which were subjected to home bleaching; however, both color difference values were below the perceptible threshold values (<0.8 and 1.2) in the all experimental groups.

Öz
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı mekanik polisaj ve glaze uygulanmış CAD-CAM seramiklerinde ev tipi beyazlatma işlemi sonrasında meydana gelen renk değişiminin değerlendirilmesidir.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmada; lityum disilikat, zirkonya katkılı lityum silikat ve monolitik zirkonya olmak üzere üç farklı CAD-CAM seramiğinden 14x12x1 mm3 boyutlarında hazırlanan örnekler; mekanik polisaj ve glaze olmak üzere iki alt gruba ayrıldı (n=8). Örnek yüzeylerine %16 karbamid peroksit içeren ev tipi beyazlatma ajanı 14 gün (günlük 4 saat) ara vermeden uygulandı. Örneklere ait renk parametreleri beyazlatma ajanı uygulamasından önce ve sonra ölçüldü. Renk değişimi değerleri iki farklı formülle (ΔE00 ve ΔEab) hesaplandı. Sonuçlar istatistik anlamlılık düzeyi P<0.05 alınarak, iki yönlü ANOVA ve Tukey çoklu karşılaştırma testleri ile analiz edildi.
Bulgular: İki yönlü ANOVA testi sonucuna göre farklı materyal ve yüzey işlemleri faktörlerinin ΔE00 ve ΔEab değerleri üzerinde etkili olduğu ve faktörler arasında etkileşim bulunduğu belirlendi (P<0.05). Mekanik polisaj işleminde, materyal grupları içerisinde en yüksek ΔE00 ve ΔEab değerleri monolitik zirkonya grubunda bulundu. ΔEab değerinin glaze uygulanmış monolitik zirkonya grubunda, mekanik polisaj uygulanmış monolitik zirkonya grubuna göre anlamlı olarak daha düşük olduğu belirlendi (P>0.05).
Sonuç: Ev tipi beyazlatma işlemi uygulanan lityum disilikat, zirkonya katkılı lityum silikat ve monolitik zirkonya seramiklerde seramik tipi ve yüzey bitirme işlemleri renk değişimi değerlerini etkilemektedir ancak bütün deney gruplarında her iki renk değişim değeri de (ΔE00 ve ΔEab) algılanabilir eşik değerlerinin altındadır (<0.8 ve 1.2).
