Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Sürdürülebilirlik Kavramına Yönelik Metaforik Algıları: “Domino Taşı Gibidir”

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma, sağlık bilimleri fakültesinde öğrenim gören öğrencilerin, “Sürdürülebilirlik” kavramına ilişkin algılarını metaforlar yoluyla keşfetmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Araçlar ve Yöntem: Metafor analizine dayalı nitel olan bu çalışma, Ocak-Nisan 2023 tarihleri arasında bir devlet üniversitesinde öğrenim gören 174 sağlık bilimleri fakültesi öğrencisi ile yürütülmüştür. Veriler, öğrencilerin sosyo-demografik özellikleri ve çeşitli metafor cümlelerinin tamamlanması şeklindeki 10 maddelik form ile toplanmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular: Katılımcıların yaş ortalaması 22.25±1.49, %89.7’si kadındır. Öğrencilerin, “Sürdürülebilirlik” kavramı ile ilgili 24 adet geçerli metafor ürettiği, bu metaforların katılımcılar tarafından 2 ile 160 arasında değişen sıklıkta kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir. Metafor başına düşen ortalama katılımcı sayısı yaklaşık 5’tir. Sürdürülebilirlik kavramına yönelik dört kavramsal kategori, “Devamlılık: Planlı değişim süreci, Çevre ve Gelecek: Ekonomik kalkınma uğruna feda edilen, Geri dönüşüm, Sağlık ve yaşam” olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuç: Sağlık hizmetlerinin çevre üzerindeki etkisinin büyüklüğü göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, geleceğin sağlık profesyonellerinin bu etkiyi azaltmada rol alabilmeleri için hazır olmaları önemsenmektedir. Bu açıdan üniversite öğrencilerinin sürdürülebilirlik kavramını nasıl algıladıklarını belirlemek üniversitelerde atılacak adımlar için önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmada öğrencilerin sürdürülebilirliği, yüzeysel olarak algıladığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Öğrencilerin sürdürülebilirliği derinlemesine kavrayabilmeleri için, ders programlarının gözden geçirilmesi, araştırmaların planlanması önerilebilir.

Metaphorical Perceptions of the Concept of Sustainability Among Students of the Faculty of Health Sciences: “It Is Like a Domino Piece”

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the perceptions of students studying at the faculty of health sciences regarding the concept of "Sustainability" through metaphors. Materials and Methods: This qualitative study based on metaphor analysis was conducted with 174 health sciences faculty students studying at a state university between January and April 2023. Data were collected with a 10-item form consisting of socio-demographic characteristics of the students and completion of various metaphor sentences. Data were analyzed with content analysis. Results: The average age of the participants was 22.25±1.49; 89.7% are women.It was determined that the students produced 24 valid metaphors regarding the concept of "Sustainability" and that the participants used these metaphors with a frequency ranging from 2 to 160. The average number of participants per metaphor is approximately 5. Four conceptual categories for the concept of sustainability have been determined as "Continuity: Planned change process, Environment and Future: Sacrificed for the sake of economic development, Recycling, Health and life". Conclusion: Considering the magnitude of the impact of healthcare services on the environment, it is important that future healthcare professionals are prepared to take a role in reducing this impact. In this respect, determining how university students perceive the concept of sustainability is important for the steps to be taken in universities. In this study, it was concluded that students perceived sustainability superficially. In order for students to understand sustainability in depth, it may be recommended to review course programs and plan research.
