Investigation of Cases Involuntarily Hospitalized Within the Scope of Article 432 of the Turkish Civil Code: Data of a Mental Health Hospital for 2021 and 2022

Abstract

Adults who pose a danger to society due to various conditions including mental disorder or weakness may be placed in appropriate institutions for the purpose of providing their treatment and education within the scope of Article 432 of the Turkish Civil Code. In this study, cases hospitalized in Elazığ Mental Health and Diseases Hospital within the scope of Article 432 of the Turkish Civil Code in 2021 and 2022 were examined. The number of cases increased by 59.39% in 2022 compared to 2021. It was determined that the majority of the cases resided outside Elazığ (89.80%). The most frequently detected diagnoses are alcohol/substance use disorders, schizophrenia spectrum disorders, and bipolar spectrum disorders, respectively. Bipolar and schizophrenia spectrum disorders were more common in females, while alcohol/substance use disorders were more common in males. It is suggested that the findings of this study be supported by further studies.
