<p>Background and Aims: This study was designed and conducted to determine the relationship between perceived stress and dietary habits in individuals with gastrointestinal system complaints. Materials and Method: The study was carried out with 222 adult individuals who presented with gastrointestinal complaints at the Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic of Antalya Training and Research Hospital and who volunteered to participate in the study. All participants were informed about the study, and informed consent was obtained. Data were collected using a face-to-face interview technique through a questionnaire. The questionnaire included items regarding participants’ individual and sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and certain dietary habits, as well as the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and the Perceived Stress Scale. Results: When changes in eating behavior during the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms were examined, it was found that individuals who showed a marked decrease in food intake or those whose food consumption was significantly higher than normal had higher levels of abdominal pain, constipation, and general gastrointestinal system symptoms. Individuals with high stress levels were found to have higher gastrointestinal system symptom levels compared to those with low or moderate stress levels. Conclusion: It was determined that the levels of gastrointestinal symptoms are associated with dietary habits and stress levels. In this context, it is considered that nutritional therapy and psychosocial factors should be taken into account in treatment approaches.</p></trans-abstract>
