From past to present, humanity faces many problems such as natural disasters, epidemics, poverty, economic and political crises, climate change and environmental pollution. As cities are seen as the future of humanity, especially the issues of “climate change and environmental pollution” have come to the agenda a lot. This issue, which has attracted attention in many disciplines, is analysed within the scope of environmental and natural resources economics in the economic literature. The aim of this study is to draw attention to the relationship between environment and technology and to identify the factors associated with environmental pollution for sustainable development for the period 2007-2019 over selected countries that are generally important in the context of technological development. In the study, fixed effect panel regression model was applied as econometric method. At this point, carbon dioxide (CO2) emission representing environmental pollution is used as the dependent variable, while foreign direct investments, gross domestic product (GDP), trade openness and renewable energy consumption are used as independent variables. According to the results of the analyses, a statistically significant and positive relationship was found between CO2 emission and GDP, while there was a negative relationship with renewable energy. However, a statistically significant relationship was found between CO2 emission and foreign direct investments and trade openness.

Geçmişten günümüze insanlık; doğal afetler, salgınlar, yoksulluk, ekonomik ve siyasi krizler, iklim değişikliği ve çevre kirliliği gibi birçok sorunla yüzleşmektedir. Şehirlerin insanlığın geleceği olarak görülmesiyle özellikle “iklim değişikliği ve çevre kirliliği” konuları çok fazla gündeme gelmeye başlamıştır. Pek çok disiplinde dikkat çekici hale gelen bu konular, iktisadi alanyazında çevre ve doğal kaynaklar ekonomisi kapsamında incelenmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, çevre ve teknoloji ilişkisine dikkat çekerek genellikle teknolojik gelişme bağlamında önemli seçilmiş ülkeler üzerinden 2007-2019 dönemi bazında sürdürülebilir kalkınma için çevre kirliliğiyle ilişkili faktörlerin tespit edilmesidir. Çalışmada ekonometrik yöntem olarak, sabit etkili panel regresyon modeli uygulanmıştır. Bu noktada çevre kirliliğini temsilen karbondioksit (CO2) emisyonu bağımlı değişken olarak, doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar, gayri safi yurt içi hâsıla (GSYH), ticari açıklık ve yenilenebilir enerji tüketimi ise bağımsız değişkenler olarak kullanılmıştır. Analiz sonuçlarına göre CO2 emisyonu ile GSYH arasında istatistiksel bakımdan anlamlı ve pozitif bir ilişki saptanırken, yenilenebilir enerji ile negatif bir ilişki olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ancak CO2 emisyonu ile doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar ve ticari açıklık arasında istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilememiştir.
