FAMILY MATTERS: EXPLORING GENDERED PATHWAYS INTO NEET STATUS IN TÜRKİYE

Abstract

This study investigates the socio-demographic and economic factors influencing the status of young people, who are Not in Employment, Education, or Training (NEET) in Türkiye. Using micro data from the 2010 to 2023 Household Labor Force Surveys, the research employs probit and logistic regression analysis to explore the relationship between NEET status and various individual and household-level determinants. The findings reveal that gender plays a significant role, with females being more vulnerable to becoming NEET due to traditional family roles, caregiving responsibilities, and social expectations. Additionally, factors such as age, educational attainment, per capita household income, and the employment status of parents, especially mothers, significantly impact NEET probabilities. Regional disparities further exacerbate these challenges for women. The study underscores the critical role of family dynamics and socio-economic conditions in shaping the NEET status, especially for young women. Policy recommendations emphasize the need for targeted interventions that address educational gaps, promote female labor force participation, and provide support for childcare and family-friendly workplace policies. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the NEET phenomenon in Türkiye, highlighting the intersection of gender, family, and socio-economic structures in determining youth outcomes.
