Anatomical accuracy in inner ear illustrations

Abstract

Objectives: Visual tools are essential for conveying complex anatomical data, and they must evolve alongside modern scientific findings. This study aimed to identify common errors in traditional anatomy atlases and digital resources illustrating the inner ear, in order to support the development of anatomically accurate educational materials. Methods: A total of 24 illustrations that health sciences students often use, 8 from printed atlases and 16 from online sources, were analyzed. The illustrations were carefully compared with dissection images to identify errors and missing parts in the depicted structures. Results: Errors were found in the depiction of the otic capsule as spongy bone; the placement of the semicircular canals in a cave-like cavity; the misalignment of the semicircular canals; the absence of a bony barrier between the middle and inner ear; the initiation point of the cochlear turn; and the lack of attention to the number of turns. Conclusion: The findings reveal a significant discrepancy between educational illustrations and actual anatomy. Illustrations should include more detail regarding clinically important structures and prioritize scientific accuracy.
