<p>Fine roots play a crucial role in tree growth and stand development, as they are vital for the uptake of water and nutrients by trees. The carbon cycle in soils is directly influenced by forest trees and grasslands through the recycling of their fine roots. Thinning is a common forest management practice, frequently applied to enhance forest health. The goal of this study was to compare and examine how live fine root biomass (FRB) changes over time in oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) forests that were thinned at different times, nearby sessile oak (Quercus petraea Liebl.) forests, and open grassland. The impact of thinning at various intensities on FRB in beech stands was found to be insignificant, with an average of 1060.2 g m⁻². Among the studied sites, the highest FRB was observed in the thinned beech sites (1080 g m⁻²), which was 22% greater than that in the grassland, where fine root biomass was lowest. FRB levels were higher in autumn compared to spring and summer. The lowest FRB was recorded in May across all sites, while the highest FRB was measured in October in forested sites and in January in the grassland site. Fine root production and turnover in forest sites were similar, although they were 32% and 43% lower than those in grassland sites, respectively. Therefore, while FRB varied based on vegetation type, long-term, regular thinning did not have a significant impact on FRB in oriental beech. Such studies contribute to our understanding of how plant communities respond to environmental changes and enhance models of carbon and nutrient cycling.</p></trans-abstract>
