Abstract
One of the changes that observed in human and animals who are
exposed to high pressure is the decrease of the heart rate and is called as «hyperbaric bradycardia». Specific reflex mechanisms, progressive hypoxia and hypercapnia have been claimed to be efficient
factors on the pathogenesis of hyperboaric bradycardia but it has been
proved that the increase of vagal activity is of no importance and reflex mechanisms haven’t played a major role. In hyperbaric environment, a decrease in erythrocyte SOD activity, an increase in lipid peroxidation products, and an existence of correlation between variousmembran phospholipid amounts and bradycardic response have been
established. In this study the preadministration of SOD + Catalase
and allopurinol prevented occurance of hyperbaric bradycardia. These findings have shown that free oxygen radicals have a role in the
pathogenesis of hyperbaric bradycardia and the primer source of free
oxygen radicals might be due to the increase in xanthine oxidase acitivity.
