Galatasaray Medical School
Abstract
As must generally be known, the date 14 March 1827 has been regarded as the beginning of a Westernized medical education in this country. In fact, the openning of the Medical School («Tıphane>») along modern lines should be seen as the significant «first step» in the Westernization of medical education in Turkey. With its transformation to Galatasaray Medical School («Galatasaray Tıbbiyesi») in 1838, it has played an important role in the modernization of «medical education founded on the basic sciences» and become a determining model in the shaping of medical faculties later on. The present paper is a concise presentation of the development of medical education between 1827 - 1849, with special reference to Galatasaray Medical School and also considering the epoch's general, socio-cultural trends.
