An Educational Game Proposal to Develop Spatial Abilities for Architect Candidates

Abstract

Spatial abilities have an important place in architectural education and professional practice. For this reason, the development of spatial abilities during architectural education will improve success in education and professional success in a positive way. With this study, a proposal has been made that will contribute to alternative methods that improve spatial abilities and an educational game called “Find Me” has been designed. The game has enabled the students to participate in the educational activity voluntarily by using their intrinsic motivation resources and to continue the educational activity effectively by focusing for a long time. Analysis of the drawings made by the students and semi-structured interviews with the students have been used to query the outcomes of the game. According to the results of the study, it has been concluded that the "Find Me" game is interesting for the students and students have been participating in the game with their intrinsic motivation. In addition, it was observed that the students used their spatial abilities throughout the game and stated that this game has a potential as an alternative approach to the development of spatial abilities. It has been observed that the spatial information conveyed to the students verbally and the mental visual-spatial images produced by the students show similarities in syntactic way, however, a weak relationship is observed in terms of form. Finally, it has been concluded that directional information and sensory information are effective in mentally transforming verbal information into spatial information and metric information is useful at a small scale, but cannot be use when the building becomes more complex.

Mimar Adayları İçin Uzamsal Yetenekleri Geliştirmeye Yönelik Eğitici Bir Oyun Önerisi

Abstract

Mimarlık eğitiminde ve meslek pratiğinde uzamsal yetenekler önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Bu sebeple mimarlık eğitimi süresince uzamsal yeteneklerin geliştirilmesi eğitimdeki başarıyı ve mesleki başarıyı olumlu yönde etkilemektedir. Bu çalışma ile uzamsal yetenekleri geliştiren alternatif yöntemlere katkı sağlayacak bir önerme getirilmiş, bu doğrultuda “Beni Bul” adında bir eğitici oyun tasarlanmıştır. Söz konusu oyunda öğrencilerin içsel motivasyon kaynaklarını kullanarak eğitsel aktiviteye kendi istekleri ile katılmaları ve uzun süre odaklanarak eğitsel faaliyetin etkili bir şekilde sürdürülmesi amaçlanmıştır. Öğrencilerin yaptıkları çizimlerin analizleri ve öğrencilerle yapılan yarı yapılandırılmış mülakatlar oyunun çıktılarını sorgulamak için kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonuçlarına göre “Beni Bul” oyununun öğrenciler için ilgi çekici olduğu ve içsel motivasyonları ile oyuna katıldıkları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ek olarak, öğrencilerin oyun boyunca uzamsal yeteneklerini kullandıkları ve bu oyunun, kendilerinin uzamsal yeteneklerinin geliştirilmesi konusunda alternatif bir yaklaşım olarak potansiyele sahip olduğu yönünde görüş belirttikleri görülmüştür. Öğrencilere sözel olarak iletilen mekansal bilgiler ile öğrencilerin zihinlerinde üretilen görsel-uzamsal imajların, yapının orijinali ile dizimsel olarak benzerlik gösterdiği, ancak biçimsel olarak zayıf bir ilişki kurduğu görülmüştür. Son olarak, sözlü bilginin zihinde uzamsal bilgiye dönüştürülmesinde yön bilgisinin ve duyulara hitap eden bilgilerin etkili olduğu, metrik bilgilerin ise küçük ölçekte faydalı olduğu, ancak yapı karmaşıklaşmaya başladığında kullanılamadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.
