Confronted unexpectedly by the Portuguese attack from the Red Sea, the Mamluk Sultan, taken by surprise, was compelled to appeal to the Ottoman Sultan; in doing so, he was in fact formally acknowledging the position of the Ottomans within the Islamic world. The sudden fall of the Mamluk territories under Ottoman domination and the immediate recognition of the Ottoman Sultan by the Sharif of Mecca did not arise solely from the superiority of the Ottomans in terms of firearms. Undoubtedly, the exceptional status the Ottomans had attained within the Islamic world since the conquest of Istanbul played a significant role in this development. According to David Ayalon, the Ottoman ability to resist the Christian world more successfully than the Mamluks essentially stemmed from their adoption of firearms. This was certainly one of the principal factors. However, the rich material preserved in the Ottoman archives today shows us that other factors played an even more fundamental role.The document we publish here fully confirms and clarifies Prof. İnalcık’s statement quoted above. Nevertheless, in order to highlight this point properly, it is necessary to briefly review the developments following the Portuguese entry into the Indian Ocean.
</trans-abstract>
