This article analyzes the theoretical development of the
concepts of “the state,” “society” and “state-society” relations, by specifying
the changing definitions, differing assumptions, and the variety of exogenous
factors that were either included or mitigated in the various theories of
international development. In this analysis, respectively, classical
development theories, modernization perspective, dependency theory,
world-system perspective, class-based development theories, neo-liberal
theories, state-centered approaches, post-modern theories and globalizationist
theories are considered. Conceptualizations of state and society in each of
these approaches are evaluated critically.
