<p>It is a troublesome attempt to provide an exact and complete description of the term ‘nation’. Philosophers from different disciplines and societies have contributed to the explanation of the concept in years by emphasizing one or few aspects of it. It is still a debatable issue, flourishing with new and different national experiences. National culture, national identity, and national character, which are immanent to nation, are contentious and changing concepts as well. Today, a widely accepted approach among scholars argues that nation and the related concepts are ongoing modern constructions. Cinema, arguably the art that is mostly engaged with the society, contributes to this ongoing construction on the one hand, has the potential to be a site to question the nation-related concepts on the other This piece of research examines the multidimensional connections and mutual influences between national cinema and the concepts of nation, national culture, national identity, and national character. Starting with providing the historical roots of the word ‘nation’ and its evolution, the text continues with modern descriptions of the term, which is followed by the contributions of cinema to nation construction and different approaches to the concept of national cinema. Various explanations of culture and national culture, and their connections to cinema comes next. Then individual and national dimensions of identity, and the connections between nation and national identity are explored, the binary role of cinema - both as serving to the construction of national identity and functioning to question it - is emphasized. Finally, national character and its reflections in cinema are discussed.</p></trans-abstract>
