Investigations on the hibernation and migration of Aelia rostrata Boh. in the Central Anatolia.

Abstract

Aelia rostrata Boh. overwinters as an adult under dry leaves or soil of surrounded of stub of Pinus spp., Acantholimon venustum, Quercus spp., Astragalus acucilaris, A. microcephalus, Thymus sp. which find on the mountains or hills named overwintering area. It can find all of in four directions. But it prefers north which is colder. Generally it is found more density at 1500-1700 m altitudes. İt hasn't any special prefer overwintering plants. Because of the unusual weather conditions in the early spring and developing depends on the conditions entomopathogen fungous Beauveria bassiana on the overwintering area, there is high mortality 80-95%. Other reasons of the mortality on the hibernation area are parasitoids Diptera and Nematoda. It's determined that if the favorable weather conditions last for several days in spring, the migration from the overwintering areas to the cereal growing areas in Ankara is started in May when the temperature reaches a daily average of 14.8-20°C and the relative humidity 46-59%. But the migration may sometimes start in April, depends on the weather conditions. The height that the insect overwinters, deep of soil that it is found, kind of overwintering plants and the weather conditions cause the migration go on step by step and the migration last 2-11 days. Besides the importance of the temperature and relative humidity in breaking the diapause and starting the activity, the pest needs sunlight in order to fly. Activity on the overwintering area is seen firstly on the sunny place and when the temperature reaches 16-18°C it starts and more in the lunch time. Depends on the climatic conditions, wheats are at stem extension on earing and the barleys are at earing or flowering stages during the period when the migration from overwintering area to the plants starts. But when the migration starts early, the wheats are at tillering stage. When the new generations adults complete their feeding in the cereal field, they migrate from the field to the mountains at the end of July, when the daily average temperature is 26°C and humidity is 45%. So the insect gives one generation in a year.
