Engizisyon, Latince “Soruşturma ve Sorgulama” anlamına gelen “Inquısıtion” kelimesinden gelmektedir. Hristiyanlıktan uzaklaşan veya dini esaslara aykırı davranan kimselerin cezalandırmak için kurulan Katolik kilise mahkemeleri ve adlî kurumlan için kullanılmış bir terimdir. Engizisyonun görev alanı, önceleri vaftiz edilmiş Hristiyanların kilise öğretisine başkaldıranları yargılamakla sınırlıydı. Daha sonra şeytana tapma, zina, cadılık, bilim adamları, Yahudiler veya Hristiyanlaşmış Yahudiler (Konvertolar) ve kısmen de Müslümanlar veya Hristiyanlaşmış Müslümanlar (Moriskolar) bu kapsama alındı. Engizisyon’un yargılama usulü ise şu aşamalardan geçiyordu: Genel yemin, af zamanı, mahkemeye celp ve sorgulama. Sorgulamada sapkından suçunu itiraf etmesi isteniyor, inat ederse işkence tekniğiyle itiraf ettiriliyordu. İtiraf sonucu hüküm verme aşamasına geliniyordu. Nihayet XIX. yüzyıl ortalarına kadar çalışmalarını sürdüren Engizisyon Mahkemeleri önce X. Pius, 1908’de Katolik imanını korumakla yükümlü “Kutsal Makam”a dönüştürüldü. En nihayet VI. Pavlus, 1965’te bu kurumu, daha demokratik biçimde yeniden düzenleyerek “İman Kurulu”na dönüştürdü. Sonunda Engizisyon tarihe karışmış oldu.
The Word “Inquisition” means investigation and interrogation, which comes from the Latin Word “Inquisition”. It is used for Catholic Church tribunals and its legal institutions that punish Christian heretics. The function of inquisition, firstly, was limited to judge those who received baptism and then became heretics. Later on satanic worship, adultery, witchery, scientists, Jewish or Christian Jewish (Converts) and partially Muslims or Christian Muslims (Mosques) had also been included to this judgment. The steps of inquisition judge were: general oath, forgiveness time, sending to the tribunal and interrogation. If the heretic insisted to confess his crime, it would make him confess by the technique of torture. After the confession the step of the sentence had been come. The inquisition tribunals were active until the middle of the nineteenth century, and then had been converted into “the Holy-Office” by Pius X in 1908 with the purpose of saving the Catholic faith. Paul VI in 1965 had reorganized this institution and made it more democratic and converted it into “the faith council”. Thus, inquisition came to an end.
