Effect of Global Climate Change on Gynecological Cancers: A Review

Abstract

Gynecological cancers are malignant pathologies originating from the female reproductive system. One of the important factors that directly or indirectly cause an increase in gynecological cancer diagnoses and the negative progress of cancer care and treatment processes is global climate change. When the literature was examined, significant evidence was found showing a definite relationship between ambient air pollution and gynecological cancers, including ovarian and cervical cancers. In this context, the aim of this review is to examine the effect of global climate change on gynecological cancers within the scope of the existing literature. When the studies in the literature are examined, it is generally stated that there is a relationship between global climate change and gynecological cancers. With global climate change, exposure to factors such as more air pollution, increasing temperatures, and floods increases the incidence of gynecological cancer and the severity of gynecological cancer symptoms. The strength of this relationship appears to increase with higher levels of intensity of change and longer duration of exposure prior to diagnosis. In line with these results, it is recommended that women health and diseases nurses evaluate and question global climate change variables and create content regarding the effects and management of global climate change in gynecological cancer awareness training.

Küresel İklim Değişikliğinin Jinekolojik Kanserler Üzerine Etkisi: Derleme

Abstract

Jinekolojik kanserler, kadının üreme sisteminden kaynaklanan malign patolojilerdir. Jinekolojik kanser tanısının artmasına ve kanser bakım ile tedavi süreçlerinin olumsuz ilerlemesine doğrudan veya dolaylı olarak neden olan önemli faktörlerden biri küresel iklim değişiklikleridir. Literatür incelendiğinde; ortamdaki hava kirliliği ile over ve serviks kanserleri dahil olmak üzere jinekolojik kanserler arasındaki kesin ilişkiyi gösteren önemli kanıtlar saptandı. Bu bağlamda, derlemede küresel iklim değişikliğinin jinekolojik kanserler üzerine etkisini mevcut literatür kapsamında incelemek amaçlandı. Literatürde yapılan çalışmalar incelendiğinde, genel olarak, küresel iklim değişikliği ile jinekolojik kanserler arasında ilişki olduğu ifade edilmektedir. Küresel iklim değişikliği ile birlikte daha fazla hava kirliliği, artan sıcaklık, sel baskınları gibi maruziyet yaşanan faktörlerin jinekolojik kanser görülme sıklığını ve jinekolojik kanser semptomlarının şiddetini arttırmaktadır. Bu ilişkinin gücü, yaşanan değişikliğinin yoğunluğunun yüksek seviyede olması ve tanı öncesinde daha uzun maruz kalma süresiyle birlikte arttığı görülmektedir. Bu sonuçlar doğrultusunda, kadın sağlığı ve hastalıkları hemşirelerinin küresel iklim değişikliği değişkenlerini değerlendirmeleri ve sorgulamaları, jinekolojik kanser farkındalık eğitimlerinde küresel iklim değişikliklerinin etkilerine ve yönetimine dair içerikler oluşturması önerilmektedir.
