Examining the Relationship Between Awareness of Oral Hygiene and Self-Assessment of Smile

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the participants' awareness of oral hygiene and the impact of this awareness on their smile confidence. A survey, including soci-demographic questions, oral hygiene queries, and a smile self-assessment, was administered face-to-face to 311 participants. They rated their smile based on tooth shape, color, alignment, appearance, and overall satisfaction (0–10 scale). The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. A significant relationship was found between gender and frequency of tooth brushing(p=0.004), with women brushing their teeth more frequently than men. Individuals with halitosis reported lower satisfaction with tooth color(p=0.002), gum appearance(p=0.004), and overall smile(p=0.025) compared to those without halitosis. Women had higher satisfaction with their gum appearance(p=0.012) and overall smile (p≤0.001) than men. People with better oral health were more confident in their smiles. Raising public awareness and promoting oral hygiene education are essential for improving smile confidence.

Ağız Hijyeni Farkındalığı ve Gülümseme Öz Değerlendirmesi Arasındaki İlişkinin Belirlenmesi

Abstract

Bu çalışmada katılımcıların ağız hijyeni hakkındaki farkındalıklarının ve bu farkındalık düzeyinin gülümseme öz değerlendirmesi üzerine etkilerinin değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Katılımcılara yüz yüze olacak şekilde sosyodemografik bilgiler, ağız hijyenine yönelik sorular ve gülümseme öz değerlendirmesini içeren üç kısımdan oluşan bir anket yöneltilmiştir (n=311). Katılımcıların kendi gülümsemelerine dişlerin şekli, rengi, hizalanması, görünümü ve genel puanını 0-en düşük ve 10-en yüksek olacak şekilde puan vermeleri istendi. Verilerin istatistiksel analizi SPSS 26.0 paket program kullanılarak yapıldı. Cinsiyet ile dişleri fırçalama sıklığı arasında anlamlı ilişki bulunmaktadır (p=0,004). Kadınların diş fırçalama sıklığı erkeklere göre daha yüksektir. Ağız kokusu olanların dişlerinin renginden (p=0,002), diş eti görünümünden (p=0,004) ve genel gülümsemelerinden memnuniyet duyma sıra ortalaması (p=0,025) ağız kokusu olmayanlardan daha düşüktür. Kadınlarda diş eti görünümünden (p=0,012) ve genel gülümsemelerinden (p≤0,001) memnuniyeti erkeklerden daha yüksektir. Ağız sağlığı ve bakımı iyi olan kişiler gülümseme konusunda kendilerinden daha emindir. Toplumun ağız bakımı konusunda bilgilendirilmesi ve bu tarz farkındalık çalışmalarının arttırılması oldukça önemlidir.
