The Meeting Point of Art and Visual Communication: Exlibris
Öz
Human communication depends largely on signs in the form of written and spoken words, images or gestures. These signs are merely representations of reality, actions and concepts in the world around us. Symbols are profound expressions of human nature. They have occurred in all cultures at all times and from their first appearance in Paleolithic cave paintings they have accompanied the development of civilization. A pictogram is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. Pictography is a form of writing whereby ideas are transmitted through drawing. It is the basis of cuneiform and hieroglyphs which are first used by Sumerians, then Egyptians in Mesopotamia. Early written symbols were based on pictograms and ideograms. The Industrial Revolution was the major technological, socioeconomic and cultural change in the late 18th and early 19th century that began in Britain and spread throughout the world. During that time, an economy based on manual labour was replaced by one dominated by industry and the manufacture of machinery. Before the invention of the print, it was easy to discern the handwriting books. But after the usage of the print, it becomes difficult. Bookplate, also known as exlibris, is usually a small print or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the inside front cover, to indicate its owner. The indicator used by the book holders by attaching their books to specify their books to them, to distinguish them from others’ books, to prevent them to be lost, to provide to be returned when found somewhere and to add the book an art value obtained with another activity is called exlibris. Thenceforth, signs and emblems are the representatives of their cultures. They are used in order to communicate and direct. Also they are used as brands which display the qualifications, services and powers of their business concerns.
