The distribution of the mites extracted from the soil and litter in the oak
woodland of Celal Bayar University Campus, Manisa was investigated for the period of
November 2008 - October 2009. Totally 5635 individuals belonging to three orders were
obtained in the sampling area. Individuals are distributed within these orders as 48%
Prostigmata, 29% Oribatida and 23% Mesostigmata. The number of the individuals in
the soil is greater strikingly than that of in the litter. Whereas the Oribatida and Prostigmata
were the most abundant orders in the spring months, the Mesostigmata was the
most abundant order in the winter months. The frequency of individuals in the litter of
Mesostigmata and Oribatida were equal, while Prostigmata individuals were more abundant
order than the other two. The frequency of the orders in the soil layer were Oribatida,
Prostigmata and Mesostigmata, respectively. The annual densities of the orders
were Prostigmata, Mesostigmata and Oribatida in the litter while Prostigmata, Oribatida
and Mesostigmata in the soil, respectively.
